Inspirations: Fate
over 7 years ago – Sun, Jan 29, 2017 at 11:51:45 PM

Hiya Dreamers!

Today, I want to pay homage to an inspiration for Dreamchaser: A Game of Destiny. This will be the first of a handful of Inspiration Updates over our campaign. I think it's important to not only recognize where you are going but how you got there. :D

Fate Core is brought to you by Evit Hat Productions.
Fate Core is brought to you by Evit Hat Productions.

Dreamchaser exists because Fate was kind enough to open the door for it!

In Fate, players will find easy to follow rules and a flexible system that help create "capable people leading dramatic lives."

Fate is character focused, not only stressing that players make everyone look awesome, the game aims to do the same! It has a collaborative character building process where you create a backstory for your character and tie other players characters in with aspects. This creates a history among the player characters so they have a built in reason to work together. Speaking of Aspects, they help you build a better picture for who your character is and give players the opportunity to imagine who they want to be, outside of a box of choices. The fate point economy helps players empower their characters and influence the story when it is most important or compelling to them. Fate advises story questions to help the GM gather ideas for where the story should go. GMs use the players' aspects to create these story questions. Fate is a compelling character driven game where players are given the freedom to go wherever the characters they imagine, want to go.

Dreamchaser is goal oriented. Players imagine a goal for their game and create characters around their goal—their dream. The dream inspires character concepts and experiences for the the character's to pursue. It flicks the first domino in a brainstorm of ideas that the players share together. This momentum carries players to create characters with enthusiasm and a story in mind. Characters have tags that further describe who a character is in a word or short phrase. Players can invoke tags to reroll failures and further describe how their character is just the fit for the job. Belief gives players a way to exert their creative control when it is most important to who their character is and what they want to get out of their game. Players imagine experiences they want in their game. These experiences create a sequence of steps or milestones toward their dream. This framework, created by the players, is handed to the GM to work with. Players help influence what each session will be like by sharing their vision for the next milestone. GMs use these visions to improve on their own ideas, gain insight into how the players might play their characters, and to gauge their expectations. Dreamchaser is an immersive story building game where players create characters to fulfill their own dreams.

Fate, thanks for opening the door!
Fate, thanks for opening the door!

I hope the comparisons share with you just how special Fate has been to the design and creation of Dreamchaser!

Special thanks to Evil Hat, Grey Ghost Press, and Steffan O'Sullivan!

Cheers to those who inspire us! Cheers to the dreamers!
