Inspirations: Lady Blackbird, New Art, Instagram
about 7 years ago – Sun, Feb 12, 2017 at 08:44:21 PM

 Hiya Dreamer!

Today's Inspiration delves into the all inclusive adventure module Lady Blackbird! John Harper's adventure module sets a starting situation, gives you just enough setting to work with, rules to play, and pregenerated characters in JUST 16 pages! Mind you, If you haven't experienced Lady Blackbird, nearly 10 pages are character sheets. Talk about packing a punch?

Lady Blackbird offers characters, each with their own role to play, in this fantastic journey of love beyond borders of class, justice, and planets. Each character has traits and tags that describe your character. Play to them and benefit mechanically. Each character also has keys or guiding goals and principles that motivate the character. Hit a key and gain experience. Play your character as designed and be rewarded for it!

The game establishes an end goal. Get Lady Blackbird to her lover the Pirate King. What happens along the way or in the end is up to you...Lady Blackbird asks the Game Master to follow the characters wherever they take the story. It views each problem, enemy, or challenge as an obstacle. Obstacles are easy to create on the fly! While each game is the same in how it starts, it is very different in its execution.

Lady Blackbird and Brent Newhall's Whispering Road helped me see that Dreamchaser was possible. A game where we can allow the players to imagine their goal. A game with an end in mind. A game that rewards players for playing to their character's strengths, whatever they might be.

Carlo Jobani's Neo Tokyo
Carlo Jobani's Neo Tokyo

My first roleplaying game was Shadowrun. I begged my dad to buy me the 2nd Edition book from the hobby store.(Mostly model cars and trains) I found the thick black book with edgy fantasy characters of the future just fascinating! Mind you, I was a 6th or 7th grader and had no idea what a roleplaying game was. It would be years before that came about. Years of walking around with that crunchy tome!

With my love for the Cyberpunk genre, it's only fitting that I would also find art that pushes Dreamchaser games in that direction. I love how Neo Tokyo gives me the backdrop of neon lights and sky rises but from the ignorant eye of this young couple. To them, it is just another day in the life. To them, their whole world might be lost in love and infatuation. Are these two innocent folks just trying to make it, or is this the beginning of a forbidden love that will ravage the city?

Short and Sweet

“It was a really refreshing system to play in, and got my imagination going like few games can!” –Riley Bowman, Playtester

“Dreamchaser allows character personalities to develop organically and in mechanically meaningful ways.” –Dan Davenport, The Hardboiled GM

“Dreamchaser is a role playing game done right. The system frees the game master to be a champion and fan of the characters and their stories.” –Cris Frank, We Hate Bards

“Dreamchaser is a fun place to visualize your dreams.” –Tim Grant, Our Personal Interests

“It really breeds discussion. Perfect for writing a screenplay!” –Matthew William Neymeiyer, We Hate Bards

“Given my line of work, a game that promotes dreams, goals, and miracles in a must have in my collection.” –Dr. Brian Quinones, LPC Child and Adolescent In Home Mental Health Therapist

“This game was a ton of fun. The AP really builds to a payoff that no one saw coming!” –Michael Ross, The RPG Academy

“Thank you for running a game so fun I forgot I was playtesting. Can’t wait to see where it goes from here!” -Jason Tocci, Playtester

Playtest Related

“Great thing about this system is we are 40 minutes in, with people who have never played the game before, we created characters, we created a setting, the plot framework, having started with nothing! “ –Michael Caldwell, We Hate Bards

“Dreamchaser undersells itself; the fine line it treads between letting the players write the story (not just parts, the story itself) while still being able to experience it authentically is something I haven’t seen before.” -Jim Dagg, Game Designer

"I love the ease of learning the game, and how simple it is to set up! The game design assists your imagination, but never hinders it in any way. Pete has created my new go-to game!" –Lindsey McCullough, Playtester

“The perfect system for introducing new players, also as a development exercise for creating good roleplayers, getting people to have a stake in their characters, it’s a good form to do that.” –Matthew William Neymeiyer, We Hate Bards

“Now, I’m not even the 100th person to say this, it is no special revelation, but there is something special about the Tabletop RPG Dreamchaser that call to mind the “let’s play pretend” aspect of these games more than anything I’ve played in recent memory.” –Kevin Smith, Melvin Smif’s Geekery

Summing it up

”Peter Petrusha's Dreamchaser system is excellent. We Hate Bards has run 3 games with it, a WW2/Fantasy commando raid, a heist game involving stealing a literal panacea from Martin Shkreli and a futuristic game that involved a father's love, a southern gentleman AI, liberating the Moon from aliens and worked as a dating simulator. It is a fun game when you want a fun game and a serious one when you want a serious one. It is free form enough to accommodate nearly anything that you would want to play but with rules and sheets that allow play to be intuitive and understandable.” –Michael Caldwell, We Hate Bards

“An RPG that asks the most important question first, what game do the players want to play, then uses the players ideas to fuel the story. Dreamchaser cuts out the excess that bog down other role playing games and gets to the core of what makes role playing exciting.” –Cris Frank, We Hate Bards

“Having played a demo of this game, I can say firsthand it is truly fun, intuitive, and easy. The group was a mix of experienced RPG players of various playing styles, adding in someone that never played any RPG before, and you would never know, because it went so fluidly.” –Matt Franklin, Playtester

“With great roleplaying elements and player driven stories, the fun depth is only limited by your imagination. That being said be prepared to push those limits as this game offers a full dive into immersion.” -Matthew William Neymeiyer, We Hate Bards Podcast

“Dreamchaser is a game we're really looking forward to. It turns conventional RPG storytelling on its head in the best way possible, putting the players into the driver's seat of story direction.” –Saddle Shaped Games

“If you want to play a game that leans toward a player driven story-line with a strong enough mechanic backing it to allow for surprises and interesting challenges, you’ll find it here. Plus, the fact that Imagining Games found a way to incorporate starting from the end to truly make the game about the journey adds a remarkably satisfying gameplay element to it. For a game so new, it feels polished.” –Kevin Smith, Melvin Smif’s Geekery

Kickstarter Related

"We strongly urge you to check out this kickstarter that just launched today. The creator is a wonderful guy and this system has tremendous therapeutic and creative potential. Have you wanted a unique experience? Please make sure to go and check Dreamchaser out.” –The Bodhana Group

“Next to the collaborative adventure design, the fascinating system the Kickstarter presents the game and the game material as very cool looking stuff. It does as well do good with a compelling designs of the rewards, which is accessible and quite affordable. Thus I recommend the project, like a lot. Specially if one fancys story games. I myself do feel quite tempted.” –Jennifer Fuss, Teylen’s RPG Corner

“This game is a no brainer. Buy it, love it. Adore the amazing artwork!” –Kevin Smith, Melvin Smif’s Geekery

What will Your Bookmark look like?
about 7 years ago – Wed, Feb 08, 2017 at 11:45:16 AM

Hiya Dreamer! We are chugging right along toward our next Stretch Goal!

Here are a couple looks at what Your Dreamchaser Bookmark could look like! Above is a vertical look and below is horizontal look for them. These are designed with a 2.5 x 8.5 inch size in mind. My thought, I hate losing small bookmarks within my books. At this size, they will be big enough to hide in your book but not so small that you cannot find them again. These bookmarks are wide, they take up nearly half the width of a page. We can even round the edges if we like. Though, that's enough about what I think!

What do you think?

Would you like a smaller bookmark? Want a different image? I want to hear from you!

These Bookmarks are just for us! You backed the Kickstarter. You unlocked these. Let's give you what you want!

Here are some choices, pick your favorite combination and put them in a comment!

Size:

  • Minicard: 1.75 x 1 inches. These are tiny, about half the size of a Business Card.
  • Big Bookmark: 2.5 x 8 or 8.5 inches. As seen above.
  • Postcard: 6 x 4 inches. Big, but with plenty of space to capture a beautiful image.

Image:

  • Dreamchaser Teal Sky: Above in Horizontal form.
  • Imagining Games: Above in Vertical form.
  • The Dream Well: Below
  • Thoughtful Warrior: Below
  • The Looking Glass: Below

Early Access Backers

With our playtests, we are going to find just the right information to put on the back side of these Bookmarks! If we deem it unnecessary, we'll just have to image both sides!

What's your size and image preference? Have another image in mind? Tell me what you want!

As always, thanks!

Inspirations: Powered by the Apocalypse, New Art!
about 7 years ago – Sun, Feb 05, 2017 at 09:19:17 AM

Hiya Dreamer!

For our 2nd installment of Inspirations, I want to pay homage to Vincent & Meguey Baker's Apocalype World Engine. It's important not only to recognize where you are going, but how you got  there!

What games are Powered by the Apocalypse? Click here!
What games are Powered by the Apocalypse? Click here!

Games powered by the Apocalypse or PbtA adapt to the characters that their players' present. The Game Master or MC is implored to follow the characters and find their story, wherever it may take them. The mechanics are descriptive and drive the story forward with every roll. A player's character sheet provides nearly everything a player needs to know to play the game. With so many excellent qualities to PbtA, I'll limit the praise to just these few.

I made Dreamchaser to give you a game that adapts to YOU. What's your dream? Having players create a common goal sets them up for success. It gives them more than a setting to inspire characters. It gives them a purpose! They imagine characters to fulfill that dream, and they do it together. So, each game doesn't just adapt to your characters, it goes one step further. It adapts to the story of pursuing their goal. We build everything around it. A setting gives you a sandbox to play in, but a goal will make your brain begin to connect the dots. That is the brainstorm that makes Dreamchaser's character creation fun! That fuels the collaborative Dream Mapping process. Have fun making characters! Have fun listening to characters being made!

Every roll in Dreamchaser provides a story moving outcome! Like Apocalypse World, it is important that there are no wishy washy outcomes. I don't want you to waste time on trivial rolls. I want each roll to move us forward, to help us tell our story, to have an outcome that has you crossing your fingers in anticipation! I created my own version of tags that are something of a hybrid of Fate's Aspects and PbtA tags. Dreamchaser's tags describe your character, the challenges that you face, and the value of your relationships. When you play to your tags, you play to who your character was designed to be. I want you to be rewarded for that. I want you to be rewarded for playing the character YOU imagined. My Tags help players make characters that can work any strategy for success, not just being strong, smart, or smooth talking. I went deeper, people in real life find a way to make all kinds of strategies work for them. Craft strategies that make even being ugly, dumb, foolish, shy, or what have you, work for you in your game!

New players to Dreamchaser? Nothing to reference but a character sheet. This game is fueled by the imagination! With a GM that knows the rules, the players create characters by pulling from their collective imagination. Each of us collects stories everyday! We read them, watch them, experience them, and talk about them. Dreamchaser uses US as the resource. Every statistical rating is on a 1-10 scale. With 4 as average, and 10 as godlike. Probabilities become familiar. The math is obvious. You are already equipped to play! We just need to unleash your creativity!

The list really could go on and on for all the merits of PbtA, but for brevity's sake, I kept it to a few points. If you haven't explored Apocalypse World or any game PbtA, you are missing out!

He Will Never Come Back
He Will Never Come Back

Daniel Bogni crafted He Will Never Come Back. I'm constantly on the lookout for art that moves me—that inspires stories. Is this an image of your past? Is this the moment you decided to change your life for the better? Is this your lost child or the thought of him/her out there all alone...I love that this image captures the sorrow, sadness, and defeat of the child but can also stand as the moment that led this character to pick him or herself up! What images pull on our heart strings more than the sadness of a child or a defenseless animal? I hope He Will Never Come Back will inspire new stories in your games.

The Super Bowl is today! Hope your team wins! If not,—you can always imagine a game with your team winning. ;D

Don't forget, tomorrow there is a Q&A with The Hardboiled Gumshoe!

  • 5:30pm PST
  • 7:30pm CST
  • 8:30pm EST

Jump on in and ask any questions!

Just $168 from our next Stretch Goal! (200% too, wow!)

Help spread the word!
